Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence

The actions in the program area Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence aim to involve EU countries with lower research and innovation performance in EU research funding in order to support scientific excellence in all European regions and to ensure Europe's global competitiveness.

The so-called widening countries include the following EU 13 countries that joined the European Union in 2004: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.

There will be calls in Teaming (for Excellence), Twinning (Western Balkans), various excellence initiatives, ERA Chairs, 'Brain circulation' and European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), some of which are already known from the previous programme Horizon 2020.
